First, make it safe

  1. If there is fire or smoke, call 111

Get everyone out of the building first, then call 111 from somewhere safe.

  2. Switch off at the main switch, if you can do it safely

If a socket is sparking, a fitting is smoking or there is a strong burning smell, turn off the main switch on the switchboard, as long as you can reach it without touching anything wet or damaged.

  3. Keep away from damaged wiring and water

Do not touch fallen lines, exposed wires or anything electrical that is wet, and keep children and pets well clear.

  4. Call us on 021 156 4005

Tell us what you can see, hear or smell, and whether the rest of the street has power. That helps us bring the right parts.

Is it the network, or is it your property?

Before you call anyone, take a quick look outside. If the street lights and the neighbours are dark too, the fault is probably on the local network, and Vector's outage page lets you check your address and report it. Vector lists cars hitting power poles, birds and helium balloons in the lines, and storm-blown branches among the usual causes, and its crews repair faults on its own lines and equipment.

If your neighbours have power and you do not, the problem is more likely on your side of the point of supply, which Vector describes as usually an isolating fuse on your boundary or the nearest pole. From there, the service line, the switchboard and every circuit in the house belong to the property owner, and that is work for an electrician. Vector also notes that after an outage it may need extra safety checks before it reconnects a property, and that an installation must meet New Zealand's electrical safety requirements before it can be connected. If you rely on medical equipment that needs electricity, register that with your power retailer before you ever need it.

What people call us out for

Typical after-hours problems include an RCD or breaker that trips again the moment it is reset, half the house dead while the other half works, a power point or switch that is hot, buzzing or scorched, water coming through a light fitting from a leak above, or a burning smell from the switchboard. Each of these has a cause, and finding it matters more than getting the power back on for an hour.

Businesses feel it hardest. A restaurant losing its kitchen circuits on a Saturday night, a shop whose lights and tills go out before opening, or an office arriving to a dead server room all need someone now, not next week. Our electricians come out at any hour, and once the urgent part is fixed we can talk about what would stop it happening again, whether that is a switchboard upgrade or rewiring a tired circuit. For apartment buildings, our apartment electrician page explains who looks after the shared wiring.

Emergency call-out questions

Do you really answer at night and on weekends?

Yes. Our electricians are available for call-outs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call 021 156 4005.

My RCD keeps tripping. Can I just leave that circuit off?

Leaving it off is the safe thing to do until it is checked. An RCD trips because it has detected current leaking to earth, so something on that circuit needs finding, whether it is an appliance, an outdoor fitting that has let in water or damaged wiring.

Water is coming through a light in my apartment. What should I do?

Turn off that lighting circuit, or the main switch if you are unsure which it is, and keep away from the fitting. Tell the building manager or body corporate about the leak, then call us to make the wiring safe.

Will an emergency repair come with a certificate?

If the repair involves new or altered fixed wiring, yes: it is tested and certified like any other work. A like-for-like replacement of a damaged fitting is maintenance and does not need a certificate.

Who fixes it, Vector or an electrician?

Vector repairs its own network, which generally runs up to the point of supply at your boundary or the nearest pole. Everything from there in, the service line, the switchboard and the wiring in the building, belongs to the property owner and is a job for an electrician.
